TORATONA.org is collaborating closely with all our partners and collaborators to prepare for the volunteer first aid assessment teams. These teams will be responsible for identifying both movable and immovable heritage assets. Ultimately, this information will assist Moroccan authorities in conducting damage assessment reports.
I’m sharing some resources with you here, including the ICCROM handbook with guidelines to follow during heritage crises caused by natural disasters.
Phase 1: Preparation and Training (Pre-Deployment)
Needs Assessment: TORATONA DIGITALIZATION will conduct a needs assessment to determine the scope and scale of the heritage rescue operation, including identifying the areas most affected by the disaster.
Training: Train volunteer first aid assessment teams on disaster response procedures, safety protocols, and the use of assessment tools such as 3D scanning equipment and drones. Provide them with copies of the ICCROM handbook for guidance.
Resource Mobilization: Secure necessary resources, including equipment, transportation, and communication tools for the assessment teams.
Phase 2: Deployment of Assessment Teams
Deployment: Send trained assessment teams to the affected areas with a focus on movable and immovable heritage assets. Teams should work closely with local authorities and stakeholders.
Assessment: Teams will assess the extent of damage to heritage assets, categorize the level of damage, and identify assets that could be completely destroyed or lost. They will also create an emergency inventory of these assets.
Phase 3: Data Collection and Documentation
Data Collection: Utilize 3D scanning equipment and drones to collect accurate data and images of damaged heritage assets. This data will be essential for restoration and conservation efforts.
Documentation: Record all findings, including assessment reports, data, and images, in a standardized format. Ensure that the documentation is organized and cataloged for future reference.
Phase 4: Reporting and Coordination
Report Compilation: Compile assessment reports and emergency inventory data, including the level of damage and the condition of heritage assets.
Communication: Share assessment findings and data with relevant Moroccan authorities, government institutions, and international organizations to facilitate coordination and response efforts.
Phase 5: Restoration and Conservation
Utilize Data: Restoration and conservation professionals can use the collected data and documentation to plan and execute restoration and conservation efforts with precision.
Government and Regional Involvement: Collaborate closely with regional authorities and government institutions to ensure that the restoration and conservation process aligns with national heritage preservation goals.
Phase 6: Continuous Monitoring and Reporting
Ongoing Assessment: Continue monitoring the condition of heritage assets to assess progress and make any necessary adjustments to the restoration and conservation efforts.
Regular Reporting: Provide regular progress reports to all stakeholders, including the government and partners, to keep them informed of the ongoing work.
This Material Heritage Rescue Plan aims to leverage modern technology and expert assessments to safeguard and restore heritage assets affected by natural disasters. By collaborating closely with local and national authorities and adhering to ICCROM guidelines, the plan seeks to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
I’m overwhelmed by the quick responses I’ve received via email from some of you so far. Please take a moment to go through the package of first aid assessment materials I’ve shared with you. It’s crucial that we all grasp the fundamentals of establishing a first aid plan, especially if we didn’t have a pre-existing one for catastrophes like this.
Kindly remain on standby as I work through a few administrative procedures, and I’ll be in touch with you shortly. Thank you for your swift response and willingness to help.
